Jalacte murder suspect shot dead in Guatemala
A Guatemalan murder suspect is dead tonight when, after fleeing the scene of the crime in Belize, his homeland did not prove to be a safe haven. According to Belize police, while their Guatemalan counterparts from San Luis Peten were investigating the murder of Jalacte Village Alcalde, Antigonus Garcia, the two suspects were identified as residents of the village of Santa Cruz, Peten. The Guatemalan cops say when they went to the area to detain the duo; they were forced to shoot at them. We do not have details of the confrontation, but one of the unnamed men was critically injured and later died. The San Luis police have since recovered the murder weapon and the second suspect is now in custody. Belizean officials are working with the Guatemalans to arrange for the transfer of the suspect so he can be charged here in connection with the death of thirty-three year old Antigonus Garcia and injuries to twenty year Marvin Cuz, both shot in the alcalde’s house on Saturday in Jalacte Village. Cuz remains at the Punta Gorda Hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
In related news, we cannot help but note that convicted murderer and escaped convict Estevan Sho remains at large and, like the most recent suspects, is said to be living across the border in Guatemala. With the unprecedented degree of cooperation now being displayed between Guatemalan and Belizean police, one can only hope that the apprehension of Sho will become a top priority. Four men have been charged with grievous harm after they ambushed a villager from Sandhill. From his hospital bed thirty-five year old James Little told police that around midnight on Monday he was walking home from a wedding when he met four men he’d had previously quarrelled with. Little says they all got into a big scuffle and when the dust cleared, he had been stabbed in his face, head and hands. Police have since arrested and charged twenty-two year old Charles Pou, twenty-seven year old Anthony Rudon, twenty year old Marvin Leslie and thirty year old David Morales with grievous harm.
Meanwhile, Dangriga cops have arrested and charged a man in connection with a Sunday night shooting. According to the police, twenty year old Kenroy Valerio reported that around 9:00 p.m., a man he recognized walked up to him, kicked him down and then shot him in the leg. Valerio was rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Since the incident, police searched the home of forty-three year old Charles Rivas of Hope Creek where they recovered a handgun and seven rounds of ammunition. Rivas has been charged with wounding, use of deadly means of harm and keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
