Shooting tied to witness intimidation
The plot thickens in a Cayo shooting that we carried on this newscast last night. Police report that the shooting of twenty-three year old Darwin Soberanis, who was seriously wounded early Monday morning as he entered his yard in San Ignacio, is connected to his role as a key witness in a criminal trial. Thirty-five year old James Smith has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, dangerous harm and deadly means of harm, while his brother, twenty-one year old Stanley Flowers, has been charged with threat of death and suppressing evidence. According to Soberanis, who is a witness in the case of the January beating of Roderick “Jolly Rancher” Matura, Flowers, who is accused of the crime, had previously threatened to kill him and his daughter. A close relative of Flowers allegedly did the same.
