Police Land Some Jobs for Youths

As we told you, Regional Commander Howell Gillett is bringing a new approach to crime fighting in the city by creating opportunities for at-risk youths from the city’s south side.  Thanks to the outpouring of support from the business community, three full-time and two part-time jobs have been secured at Chon Saan Palace and Bruce Bike Shop, respectively. Gillett says that there has been a lot of interest for jobs and he will work towards securing even more opportunities once they become available. He tells the media why employment of at-risk-youth is important to the policing in the south side.

“Recently, we were able to engage the support of the community and we were able to get five jobs; three of them are permanent and two temporary for students. There are many people calling in and saying, ‘Sir, we saw what you are doing. Can you add us to the list?’ But it comes with time. There are other businesses that we are in dialogue with and very soon there will be more job opportunities for young people. There are people who want to work and keep out of a life of crime and then there are those whether you provide a job or not, they would still be involved in crime. But we will apply the law on those who don’t want to change and for those who want to change; we will try to create the enabling environment for them.”
