Burglar wounded by nightclub owner

Fifteen-year-old Teddy Reyes is recovering at the K.H.M.H. after he was shot while caught trespassing Saturday night. Jose Antonio Nunez, who owns Bel Taco and Chi Chi’s Night Club on Hyde’s Lane, says his dogs alerted him to something unusual and he went outside to investigate.

“I was frightened because I see about five dark skinned guys out here. What are they doing on my veranda? In order to get here you have to climb, I think it’s a little over twenty feet high, plus I have barb wire and the razor wire. When I saw the guys, the first thing that came to my mind was supposed they have a gun, because almost everybody have gun now in Belize. So I said freeze and everybody tried to run, some on the mango tree and some out here. So I just aim on the foot and I just took one shot.”

“After the police arrived, he was right here lying on the floor. The police asked him what he was doing here and he repeated over and over that about twenty guys were chasing him with guns and that’s why he was here.”

As far Patricia Cruz is concerned, her under-age son was only trying to sneak into a dance in progress in Chi Chi’s.

“He said he gwine (was going) to a party, some school party…I noh know weh (where) the party mi deh (was). And I nevah expect fi know that he gone over there to Chi Chi’s.”

“He tell he middi (was) climb up to get up in the dance because deh (they’re) under age, and he seh the same time the man middi come, and he stoop down and that’s when the man shot ah eena ih (him in his) back.”

Reyes underwent surgery early Sunday morning after a bullet penetrated his lower back and leg.
