Libertad taxi-driver murdered in his vehicle; cane farmers questioned

Story PictureThere is yet another murder to report in our newscast tonight. This time around, the victim, a taxi-driver, was a resident of Libertad Village in the Corozal District. The fifty-two year old Guatemalan National, who recently moved to Corozal, was hacked to death sometime last night. Duane Moody has this report.

Duane Moody, Reporting,
Shortly after six yesterday evening, a group of men returning from a fishing trip discovered the lifeless body of a man some one hundred and twenty-five yards on this feeder road behind me. The man has since been identified as fifty-two year old Guatemalan National, Miguel Angel Aldana. Aldana’s son, Wilber, told us that they knew something was wrong when Aldana’s routine visits home were disrupted.

Wilber Aldana, Son of Murdered Victim
“He left yesterday morning at sixty thirty to work. He used to run a taxi but we don’t know the motive as to why they killed him. At ten o’clock he will go see my mother to give her money to eat. He would come home to eat twelve and go back at one. At four he would come home to rest, He didn’t interfere with anyone.”

Supt. Miguel Guzman, O.C. Corozal Police
”Inside this feeder road they saw Ford Escort X-Wagon type car with Corozal Taxi License plate, D2268, with its right front passenger’s door opened and on the ground next to the car they saw the lifeless body of a male Hispanic person face down. The body had what it appeared to be two stab wounds to the back region, chop wounds to the left and right hand and head region mainly on the face and head.”

The blood splattered on the exterior and interior of the vehicle and all over the crime scene suggests that Aldana defended himself desperately. Police believe that he had a number of attackers and police have several persons detained for questioning.

Miguel Guzman
“At this point in time we have not ascertained a motive of what exactly he was doing in the area. There are several possibilities that we are looking at
and some the possibilities are that, well he is a taxi driver. Somebody may have hired him and then later on ask him to take them to that area. That is a possibility. That is still not conclusively.”

But according to Wilber he does not know his father to have any enemies but knows that some of his father’s belongings are missing and suspects robbery.

Wilber Aldana
He did not have any enemies. When he was young, he lived around here. He left and came back recently to work as a taxi man. They stole some money from him as well as a chain he was wearing. But we don’t know if they only wanted to rob him or there was another motive. We want justice because there were more than one man that killed him just by the way they left him.“

Duane Moody Reporting for News Five

The persons detained are all cane farmers of Concepcion and Libertad Villages in the Corozal District that were working in the area.
