Prisoner wounded in escape attempt
Bernard Smith, an inmate at the Hattieville Correctional Facility, was shot in the leg by prison officers after he allegedly tried to escape. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Smith, who was inside his cell at the isolation section of the institution, was engaged in a fistfight with fellow prisoner, Keith Sambula. When the prison’s Quick Response Team went to see what the fuss was about, Smith tried to run away. Reports are that as Sambula was being questioned about the fight, Smith suddenly ran towards the cell door. The officers, fearing Smith was trying to break free, fired a warning shot. But instead of stopping in his tracks, Smith continued to flee and that is when he was shot. Smith was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was treated for his flesh wound and returned to Hattieville.
