Are Belize passports still for sale on web?
The exposure of the passport sandal may have put a dent in the illicit trade in Belizean nationality, but it appears that some people just don’t seem to get the message. An advertisement in the September twenty-eighth issue of the Economist magazine seems to tell readers that they can obtain a Belize passport, but the details are scarce. Upon visiting the website we discovered that what they’re really selling is booklets, not passports, which for a mere forty-nine ninety-five will tell you everything you need to know, including how to obtain a passport without having to live here. When we called the company, located in Corozal, a woman named Roberta told us that what they were referring to was not the sale of Belizean nationality, but the obtaining of a passport quite legally, once you had acquired permanent residency. The last time we checked, however, citizenship still required five years of residence in Belize. As for anyone who deals with the crowd in Corozal, let the buyers beware.
