Yabra remains unbeaten in B.P.F.L.

Good evening I’m James Adderley, and you’re right on time for this fresh dish of Sports Monday. Week II of the Belize Premier Football League competition took our cameras to the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday, where the defending champion Kulture Yabra held fort against the visiting Acros Verdes of San Ignacio. And here we see the marching in of both teams led by head referee Leroy Clother.

In the early going Bent Burgess sets table with a heel play, but the resulting shot only serves to create excitement. In response, Yabra goes to its newest member, Daniel Thomas, who shows off his skills. But the other newcomer, Stanley “Rice” Robinson, can’t get enough power on the pill.

Emory Nunez then gets his turn to move the scoreboard, but is partially blocked by good defensive work. At the end it’s Bent Burgess who could shake things on this nice feed from John Trapp, but Shane Moody comes up with a big time save. Add Landi Pinelo to the list of attackers who got close to opening the scoreboard in the first half as Darren Hinds saves.

In the closing moments of the first half, Norman “Tilliman” Nunez launches this outside bomb that serves to highlight Darren Hinds’ goalkeeping abilities, but at intermission we’ve got a scoreless ballgame.

So we go to second half and it’s less than five minutes into action when Emory Nunez comes up with this nice individual effort and then smashes the pill perfectly into the net with the left foot. We’ve got a 1-nil Yabra lead.

In a bid to make it 2-nil Emory tries the Nunez to Nunez connection, but Norman “Tilliman” can’t catch up to make contact. By the way Yellowman Rawley this effort looks too good to be squandered in this fashion.

Norman Nunez then centres into the danger zone, and again Edon “Yellowman” Rawley flashes his move, but again there’s no goal to show. Of course if you’re one to complain, you have good reason when Norman Nunez misses this one on one situation from point-blank range.

On the next offensive press Yabra goes to Yellowman Rawley, but his left foot launch is directly at Darren Hinds.

Meanwhile, if you get the feeling that it’s all Yabra in the second half, you’re right on the money. Acros Verdes did get this opportunity to tie the score, but came up empty.

The definition in this ballgame comes when Hinds is forced to take Emory Nunez down inside the eighteenth. Referee Clother rules penalty, Vallan Symms steps up for the conversion and does so successfully for the 2-nil Yabra lead.

In the closing minute of the ballgame Real Verdes gets an opportunity to come up with the consolation goal from the penalty spot. Ouch! They fail to execute–Yabra wins it third in a row, 2-zip, while Verdes has drawn one and lost one.

In other matches around the league, San Pedro bombed Corozal 5-2, Juventus jerked Belmopan Bandits 3-1, while Sagitun sunk Griga 2-zip.

Turning to the cycling scene, Sunday’s fifty miles Honda Classic was won by Ernest Meighan in two hours, eleven minutes, Jeffrey Zelaya took second, Ariel Rosado third, Michael Lewis fourth, while Mateo Cruz rounds out the top five.

On the junior side of this event, which was also scheduled for fifty miles, Marlon Castillo took the event in two hours, twenty-four minutes, seven seconds, beating out Giovanni Leslie and Keith Enryght in that order.
