Family Asks Perpetrator of ‘Lelo’ Knockdown to Come Forward

Aurelio Gonzalez

Sixty-five-year-old Aurelio Gonzalez, known to all as ‘Lelo,’ remains in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital with injuries sustained in a late-night traffic accident on the Old Northern Highway between Maskall and his residence in St. Ann’s. While he is out of imminent danger, his family is tonight asking for the culprit to step forward and admit fault in the incident. News Five spoke to his daughter in Belize City this afternoon.

Noemi Stephen, Daughter of Accident Victim

“All we want as the family and [me] as the daughter and for my ma to be strong, is for the person weh do it fi just come forward; we noh want put ah with police or anything. We just want them to come forward and admit it; da somebody from Maskall and we already know da who; we have different witnesses weh come forward, dehn just no wah come pah media. But we know more or less who do it but dehn no come to we. We noh have nothing fi tell them bad outa de way, just to tell them at least come see my ma or something; dehn no have to come see me or nothing.  Around eleven o’clock I get a call from my mammy, stating that the police vehicle di bring down my pa and the ambulance would meet them because she mi think dat ih drap offa ih bicycle; however when she called me and we reach hospital, we find out dat dah noh really offa di bicycle ih drap – the doctors confirmed this was a knockdown; this man had too much injury. Everybody know ah as ‘Lelo’, and ih sixty-five years old. I think majority of the people know him because he sells at the market in Belize City every Saturday and he likes to go to Princess every Sunday. So I guess majority of the people out there know him.

“And where the accident took place, you said it’s somewhere between Maskall and St. Ann’s…”

“It’s not far, like less than a mile from his house.”

Aaron Humes

“Was it a dark area?”

Noemi Stephen

“Yes, there was no lamppost light there.”

Stephen says the family is considering moving Gonzalez to a private medical facility due to lack of beds at the Karl Heusner. He sustained a broken leg, various cuts to the body and a cut to the face causing a scar. Police have received a report and are investigating.
