Mother and deceased newborn return to P.G.

Story PictureInvestigations continue into the tragic story of a newborn baby boy— delivered solely by his own mother at the Punta Gorda Hospital—who subsequently died at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after fighting for his life for seven days. The mother was scheduled to take back the dead infant to her village today for burial. The baby’s mother, Cenaida Reymundo, believes negligence is at the root of her tragic account. She told News Five that she went into labour at the hospital last Wednesday night and despite her cries of pain, she was never attended to. According to Reymundo, it was not until after she gave birth and left her room that the nurses responded to her call for help. When assistance was finally rendered the umbilical cord was discovered wrapped around the baby’s neck. The mother and child were subsequently taken to Dangriga, and then transferred to Belize City because the infant needed to be placed on a ventilator. But even that plan ran into trouble as the ambulance broke down on the Hummingbird highway in transit to the City. And when Reymundo finally reached the K.H.M.H., there were no available ventilators. That series of unfortunate events ended fatally for Reymundo’s newborn on Tuesday night.
