Butane depot held up by lone gunman
We’re not sure if the gunman was attracted by the newly raised prices for butane, but this morning the offices of one of the nation’s largest gas dealers was the victim of an armed robbery. At around ten-thirty a lone dark-skinned man walked into the offices of Southern Choice Butane Gas Company on the Northern Highway in Ladyville. The visitor, who was not wearing a mask, pulled out a gun and put it to the head of the secretary on duty and demanded money. She quickly rounded up several parcels containing a total of around fifteen thousand dollars in cash and cheques and handed it over. The robber then left the building, jumped onto a bicycle and rode off down the highway. A number of employees, quickly recovering from their initial shock, took off on foot in cautious pursuit. But, as it turns out, the jacker had some help. According to a company spokesman, a black Chevy pickup with no license plates was waiting on the side of the road and sped off with the gunman and the loot…that is most of the loot. In his haste, the fleeing felon dropped one of the bags, which left him about a thousand dollars lighter. At news time police were still looking for the robber and the getaway vehicle.
