CitCo Says No to Rehiring Fired Employees
The Belize City Council says it is not interested in taking back any of the six employees fired a week ago. A meeting took place today with the executive of the Christian Workers’ Union and employee representatives. Notably, Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner and C.W.U. president Evan “Mose” Hyde are brothers-in-law—a fact which Hyde says won’t eclipse his judgment in representing the union members. After expressing their collective concerns, the council would not budge from its position. City Administrator Candice Miller and five other senior employees, two of whom are represented by the Union, were released last week. While Miller and the two other ex-employees are fighting for compensation, the others have remained silent. For its part, City Hall bid bon voyage, saying it wished its former employees all the best in their future endeavours.
