Rounding out the series of this weekend’s events is a competition, the likes of which Belizeans have yet to experience. Jacqueline Woods reports.

The choir is only two years old, but the young men and women of Anglican Cathedral College have already established themselves and are looking to win the first ever Gospel Choir Competition.

Chris Bradshaw, Director, A.C.C. Choir

“Well so far we have been doing quite well. The choir got gold at the Festival of Arts for their “Peace on Earth”.

Jacqueline Woods

“When did you all start rehearsing for this weekend’s competition and how has the group been coming along?”

Chris Bradshaw

“Well, this is our second week in rehearsal, because as you know, everybody was on summer holiday. And they rehearsed the first week, it was kind of a bad start because students had different commitments. Some of them had to be getting books and had other appointments with their parents, so rehearsal was kind of scanty. But on Monday we told them what the competition was all about and they got more interested in it, so they started coming out.”

The A.C.C. choir is just one of eight groups that have confirmed to compete in the event.

Jacqueline Meighan, Organizer, Gospel Choir Competition

“There is a lot of talent in the high schools. And I noticed from different events that I attended that we have some very good singers in the schools, and I decided that a gospel competition will expose our students a little with their talent.”

Jacqueline Woods

“How you looking forward to Saturday?”

Chris Bradshaw

“Well I’m hoping that we will win.” (laughs)

The choirs will be singing to the top of their voices for the grand prize of one thousand dollars.

Jacqueline Meighan

“The judges will be looking on the creativity. That will be their appearance, the attire that they choose to wear, the voice match to the song chosen, whether it is commanding, smooth et cetera, and the audience command, how well the audience appreciates what the participant is doing on stage.”

This year the organisers decided to hold only a choir competition, but there are plans for the future to include solo, duet and band competitions as well. Reporting for News 5, Jacqueline Woods.

The competition gets underway at the Belize City Centre on Saturday, September fourteenth. Tickets will be sold at the door for seven dollars reserve, five dollars general. Students pay only four dollars and children two dollars.
