Bz-Mex friendship fair opens tonight

Story Picture
The official calendar of September celebrations events was already pretty full, but it seems that each day finds new activities designed to bring out a public often starved for decent entertainment. One affair that should appeal to Belize City families opens tonight at a familiar venue. News 5’s Jacqueline Woods dropped in for a preview.

At the Memorial Park workmen were busy putting on the final touches for this year’s Mexico-Belize Friendship Fair.

Arturo Trejo, Mexican Ambassador to Belize

“Well, the main purpose is to get Belizeans and Mexicans together. Especially Mexicans from Quintana Roo because of the neighbourhoodship and an interest in Belize. So this time we are having an event with cultural presentations.

“Every night we will have different cultural performances, Belizean as well as Mexican. And on Monday, the sixteenth of September, we’re celebrating the Mexican independence day. All the people of Belize are invited, it will be at 8 o’clock. We will have fireworks and one of the main cultural presentations, which will be the Folkloric Ballet of the State of Vera Cruz, very beautiful music.”

“Presently in the country for the occasion is a group of business persons from Mexico. The delegation is headed by governor Joaquin Hendrix. According to Arturo Trejo, the Mexican Ambassador to Belize, both Governor Hendrix and Prime Minister Said Musa will be engaged in a number of talks to further strengthen the relationship between both countries.”

“We want to foster investment, we want to foster trade, we want to foster, above all friendship between Mexico and Belize.”

“Well as you might know there is a sister city relationship between Belize City and Chetumal. And this is an occasion also for fostering this relation, to give it more impulse. From now on, there will be regular cultural presentations from Belize in Chetumal and from the State of Quintana Roo, from Chetumal, here in Belize. So the fair gives also a framework for this sister city relationship. There will be a meeting between the mayors and the staff of the City Council of Belize and the counterparts of the government of the municipio of Chetumal. That will take place today also, so this is also a very important aspect which will bring together in this occasion.”

The fair officially gets underway at 7:00. It will come to a close on Monday, September sixteenth. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.

As part of the celebrations, the embassy will also host an exhibition on Maya culture. That show opens on Friday at the Mexican Institute on the Newton Barracks.
