Sutherland flexes his way into Mr. Belize title
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’ve just logged on to this phat version of Sports Monday. Our national celebrations have brought with it the usual flurry of sporting activities. Saturday night at the Holy Redeemer Parish Hall it was Belizean bodybuilding in full bloom.
We open to this display of abdominals by the three competitors in the Junior B Class of the Mr. Belize 2002 package. And those of you with a belly shouldn’t try this at home.
After the individual performances the cores were tabulated. Eric Meighan finished a disappointing third. Allan Tsai of Pelayo’s Gym took second place. But the night belongs to Rene Rivero, who walks away with the top prize and we say good show to the newest of the newcomers.
Meanwhile, Rivero, fresh from his victor, rolls into the Junior A Class against sturdier competition. And believe me folks, these guys are flexing serious muscles.
Now to the decision, BDF’s Francis Lizama finished 4th, Rene Rivero has to settle for 3rd, Fitzgerald Davis displayed the most body mass in this category, but he picks up 2nd place to make way for the winner and hailing from the Belize Defence Force, Ben Abba.
So we go to the Masters Competition for the forty and over athletes, and there are five of them making a bid. Give it your best shot guys. And you can see this competition is pretty keen, especially with only three prizes being awarded.
Once the dominant force in Belizean bodybuilding, Thomas Wright has to settle for 3rd place in the Masters in 2002. The defending champion in this class is Guy Neal, but this time he pulls up second and the winner is Dylan Jones. Sports Monday takes this opportunity to send Dylan Jones our warmest congratulations–it’s been a long time coming.
Of course the bodybuilding show left the best for last and these are the big boys of Belize looking for the biggest title in the nation.
Meet Roger Sutherland of Neal and Gordon’s Gym. He presents a sculptured body that shows years of dedicated hard work. The defending champion Gilroy Nembhard looks like a chiselled work of art as he hears the roar of approval from his many fans. Then steps up Jermaine Arnold, who is well stacked and well groomed for this event. The ever dangerous Deon Danderson is next with this display of a world class body. While, Guy Neal brings back his prime time package to make a run at the big title. For sure folks, this is a perfect picture of wall to wall muscle as the big three close in for the kill.
Here’s one more look at these three serious competitors before we go to the decision.
The veteran Guy Neal finishes in 4th place. Deon Danderson takes 3rd. And when the announcer hollers that Gilroy Nembhard has to settle for 2nd in 2002, the crowd roars to the fact that the new Mr. Belize is Roger Sutherland. Sports Monday says congratulations and congrats to the entire bodybuilding community for that well packaged show.
Changing gears folks, let’s head to the M.C.C. Grounds where the freshly divorced Belize Premier Football League opened it’s annual season with an all day marathon featuring the eight teams participating.
It was a massive show that found Belmopan Bandits facing the defending champion Kulture Yabra in the finals, but an unexpected B.E.L. power failure forced a hasty conclusion to this match. As a result, both teams ended up sharing the four thousand dollars prize money equally. And now the B.P.F.L. gets ready to launch its regular season this weekend of September fourteenth and fifteenth and Sports Monday takes this opportunity to wish the BPFL maximum success.
Finally folks, the 3rd Lion Man Triathlon comes this Sunday September fifteenth, bringing with it as much excitement as you can handle.
Melvin Torres, one of the organisers, spoke to us.
Melvin Torres, Organiser, Lion Man Triathlon
“This year we have lengthened the swimming to about one furlong maximum and the running we have increased. But the event will run from the swim. The swim will be about quarter mile and after the swim they will go directly into the ride and the ride will be twenty miles. It will start from the Port Authority compound at the low berthed section and they will be going to the nightspot on the road known as Obsession. And they will be making a circle at mile ten and finishing just inside two miles, where Santino’s warehouse is.”
James Adderley
“The first time you entered the Lion Man last year, you came in first. Was that planned?”
Kenroy Gladden, Winner 2001 Lion Man Triathlon
“It wasn’t planned, but it just came up.”
James Adderley
“What do you think about the difference between you and the rest that also ran last year?”
Kenroy Gladden
“Well I was just able push out more than they were willing to push out for that day.”
James Adderley
“You biggest challenge was the gentleman from the BDF. How did you handle him?”
Kenroy Gladden
“Well, I knew he was strong and good, he was the champion for last year, so I just try to keep as close as possible to him and get the jump on the finish.”
Folks if you’re thinking about real excitement, then join the Third Lion Man Triathlon when it blasts off from the Port Harbour this Sunday September fifteenth at 8:00 a.m. sharp. See you there.
That’s our show for today, we certainly invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
