Duelling accordions in concert tonight

It may not be as radical as east meets west, but music lovers should get an earful tonight as Brukdown virtuoso Wilfred Peters and Colombian professional Lacides Romero Meza perform their version of duelling accordions.

“The purpose of tonight’s concert is to continue the interest in accordion playing in Belize. We have a history of accordion playing, Mr. Peters Boom and Chime, which came from Mahogany camp, but there’s only Mr. Peters left and I am pretty worried about him because we want to continue that very vibrant part of our Brukdown Creole culture. So we took advantage of considering Lacides Romero Meza, another Colombian accordion player to come and entertain us and play with Mr. Peters. They’re not necessarily gonna play together; they might gel afterwards, I’m not sure, but to have the interest in accordion playing.”

Lacides Romero Meza, who has been playing professionally for the past thirty years, says his wish is to see accordion music become just as popular in Central America like has been in Europe. For tonight though, Meza says he hopes the songs will spark a renewed interest in accordion music. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.

The show starts at 7:30 at the Mexican Cultural Institute. Admission is ten dollars.
