Cabbie’s Last Fare Leads to Murder

The extended Commonwealth Holiday weekend was an exceptionally violent and bloody one across the country, with murders, disappearances and road traffic accidents being reported as early as Saturday morning.  The carnage came to a bitter end on Monday night with the death of a popular taxi man, who was shot and killed while transporting a pair of men along the George Price Highway in the vicinity of Homeland Memorial Park.  Luis Carlos Moh was found dead moments after being shot in the chest and back by a pair of passengers he had picked up in the Old Capital.  The latest homicide, as News Five’s Isani Cayetano would find out, punctuated another murderous weekend.

“We are just trusting in the Lord, accepting what the Lord has given us, you know, because it’s only him who decides what happens and what has happened.  And we accept whatever he has for us.  The only thing that we ask for is prayers, you know, because that’s the only thing that sustains us.”

Another cabdriver from Belize City has been killed in the line of duty.  He is Carlos Moh, a well-known taxi man in the King’s Park neighborhood.  Police say that he picked up a fare sometime after nine o’clock on Monday night and was headed to the Eight Mile community when the trip took a sinister turn.

“The body was discovered sometime after eleven last night.  Sometime at about minutes to ten, police had received some information about shots being fired in the Eight Mile [area of] the George Price Highway.  As a result, police from Hattieville visited that area where they spoke to a security guard working at a nearby location where he informed the police that he had heard some shots coming from the Homeland Memorial [Park] area.  As a result, police visited that area and they found an abandoned white in color Toyota Camry on the street side and also [upon] making further checks inside the bushes, led to the discovery of a male person with a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest and to his back.  He was identified as Luis Carlos Moh, a Belizean of King’s Park area.”

According to his mother, retired educator, Filomena Moh, there isn’t much that the family knows about the horribly gruesome incident.  The last time she spoke with her son was at a funeral over the weekend when she was burying a sibling.

“So far I cannot say what exactly is the case, you know, because we haven’t heard, the only thing that we have heard from the police is that my son was killed at mile eight and that’s all that we know so far.  We don’t know anything more.”

“Police are saying that they understand that he, as a cabdriver, was giving a drop to someone in that area.  When was the last time you saw your son and when was the last conversation the family had with him?”

“The last time that I saw my son was on Saturday when we were, we had my sister’s funeral, because I just buried one of my sisters.  That’s the last time I saw my son and I spoke to him.  From there I hadn’t seen him, but his dad told me that yesterday he was here with him talking, you know.”

Accompanying Carlos at the time of the deadly shooting was his girlfriend.  She was being held in police custody up to this afternoon.

“What police have so far gathered is that Mr. Moh was called to do a taxi run to Eight Miles and along with him was his girlfriend at the time, where they picked up a male person on Vernon Street and thereafter they drove to Eight Miles and whilst on the way they picked up another male person.  Whilst driving to Eight Miles, they were ordered to go to Homeland Memorial Park where upon arrival at that location, the female observed one male person with a firearm and she managed to jump out of the vehicle and thereafter she heard the shots in the area.”

Ironically, the last conversation Moh had with his father was about the brutal slaying of hot dog vendor Juan Vargas, whom he considered to be a best friend.  Carlos Moh leaves behind an infant son.

“He has a son that is with me right now and he loves his son very much and the little boy loves him very much too.  He used to come and see his son, visit his son with us, you know, and he used to take care of the baby most of the time and would take him out and play with him, you know, take him out to have a good time with his son, you know, and the last time he saw his son was at the funeral we had, you know, with my family.”
