Gangs’ Net Ensnared Luis Carlos Moh
On Wednesday, alleged gang leader Nicoli Rhys appeared in court, charged with the murder of taxi operator Luis Carlos Moh, who was found near Homeland Memorial Park on Monday dead of gunshot injuries. He had been called to pick up two persons in Belize City and take them to mile eight on the George Price Highway, before being held up at gunpoint and ultimately murdered. But there is an interesting theory about why he was killed. Despite not having any outward connections to gangs in the City, simply being seen picking up suspected members of a gang rival to the one ruling the area he was from may have been his downfall. ASP Alejandro Cowo says police are still tracking the second man thought to be involved.

“There is another male person that we are still looking for.”

“Now, as regarding this crime, is there anything specific – I know that Mr. Moh was from Berkeley Street, and I know that he was friendly with certain gangs – Rocky Road, Southside, and Wagner’s Lane/Berkeley Street – that he would transport them, as necessary. So it’s very unusual that he should end up transporting people from a rival gang. Was he targeted because of his relationship, maybe just straight business relationship, to gangs which are rival to the gang Mr. Rhys is a part of?”
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“As far as we know, he was at his residence on that night when he received a call to do taxi service, and he proceeded to a location to pick up a person and that was the last time he was seen alive. He’s a normal person, that he has given his number to many people, so whosoever calls him, he goes and renders that service that they require.”

“Okay; but if you live on Berkeley Street and you work with people in and around that area, the last person you will pick up is somebody from George Street?”
ASP Alejandro Cowo
“We know that he is a friendly person and he associates and mingles with anybody. And it is his job that he does; if you need his service, he will come to you. That is how he earns his living.”
