Sculptor prepares new works for export
Be it music, paint or wood, it’s no secret that Belize is home to some of the region’s most talented artists. Today we visited one local sculptor whose work has earned him praise ranging from curious neighbours to international collectors. Curl Gordon may live on Victoria Street, but through his ample imagination, his work embodies the spirit of all mankind.
Curl Gordon, Sculptor
“The name of this piece is Immaculate Conception. Why? Because, for instance the woman she is not really in pain, but at peace. You see the child is ready to be, you know.
“This wood is mahogany, it’s figured, it has a lot of designs if you notice. And you would see only two feet down here; I’ve got a woman here and in this area here I’ve got the man. You might probably wonder what it is, but when I look at my work from different angles or postures…see this is the heart, I carve this heart here because of these two people. The love that these two people have together, they share one heart.
“The art is inside you. There is something that is inside everybody that is good. And the harmony within that person, or whichever person it might be, all you’ve got to do as a individual is to go within yourself, dig a little deeper.”
“There’s a lot of friends of mine carving presently and I know they have the potential to do these. But I’m sure that they prefer just to make the little small pieces to make that quick buck. I’m all about money too, but if I can keep in doing what I’m doing I will always have money…the money is going to come.”
“I don’t want to depart with them. It’s like I fall in love with them… I usually fall in love with my piece when I get through doing it. I wouldn’t want to depart with it because after it goes it’s gone. But I don’t worry too much when it’s gone because it’s always a part of me.”
The pieces featured in that story were commissioned by a private collector in Minnesota and are scheduled to leave the country tomorrow.
