B.T.B. promotes September celebrations
With September only days away, the heat is on for the celebrations committee to get their act together and make last minute preparations for a month of festivities. But as News 5’s Jacqueline Woods found out today, while the organisers are getting help co-ordinating events, they still need the public’s support.

Although much of the activities are the same for this year’s celebrations, the organisers say this September Belizeans can expect an improved and fun-filled series of events.

“The September celebrations is actually a very festive time of year in Belize, so it actually will encompass a celebration of our culture, our history, our people and our nation. And there are a lot of the traditional events that form part of the September celebrations, which required it to be part of the September celebrations. But in addition, there is always room for more exciting events that would add to it. And so that was also given consideration too. And you will notice that on the calendar of events there will be a number of new events that will highlight Belize’s theme.”
This year’s theme: Proud and Strong at 21, was chosen from a number of entries. According to B.T.B.’s Media Liaison Officer, Shakira Oxley, it was not easy for the committee to make the selection, but in the end there were specific reasons why they chose the theme submitted by Camille Salazar Hunt.

“We got some very insightful ones, but the committee also felt that it was important to keep it short and to the point and hence, Proud and Strong at 21.”
The September activities are being co-ordinated by the Belize Tourist Board, in conjunction with the business community and a number of ad hoc committees.

“We’ve gotten support from a number of the business communities and we are also engaging their participation in the best dressed competition as well as part of the September celebrations.”
It’s now up to the public to support the events and enjoy the activities leading up to September twenty-first.

“Well this year I think is going to be more fun and exciting. We’re also going to have a presence on the radio and encourage people to actually call in and participate. It’s going to be very educational and it’s going to target adults and kids alike.”

The September festivities officially kicks off this Saturday with a Dance and Cultural Bram at the Princess Hotel poolside, hosted by the Belize Arts Council and B.T.B.
