Yu cites continuing threat from mainland

Throughout his visit, Premier Yu has stressed the importance of self-determination, going so far as to praise Belize for seeking a peaceful end to Guatemala’s territorial claim. But it was Taiwan’s own independence that the Premier emphasised in his message to both the Taiwanese community and those from the Peoples Republic of China who are living in Belize. According to Yu, relations between the two countries at best remain strained.
Yu Shyi-kun, Premier, Taiwan
“They have yet to renounced the use of force against Taiwan. In addition, they deployed some four hundred missiles on the opposite side of the Taiwan Strait against Taiwan. Internationally, there have been suppressing Taiwan relentlessly. Belize is an example, after we establish diplomatic ties, they just cut ties with Belize. This situation also happened in many other countries. The PRC is now trying to entice the other countries into breaking diplomatic ties with Taiwan.”
“While Taiwan is under the military threat of the PRC, the Belizean government and people have relentlessly rendered support for Taiwan’s participation in the international organisations and related activities. So I appreciate that Belize can assert international justice in the international arena for the twenty-three million people on Taiwan and for their human rights.”
Belize has pledged to support Taiwan in its bid to join the United Nations, World Health Organisation and other international bodies. The larger and more militarily powerful Peoples Republic claims Taiwan as a renegade province and has sought to block Taiwan from participating in world affairs as an independent nation.
