Dwayne Davis Gets 14 Years for Manslaughter of Doctor Ivan Garcia
Thirty-seven-year-old Dwayne Davis, who pleaded guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter, six years after he was charged with the murder of Doctor Ivan Garcia, learnt his fate today. After hearing mitigation pleas on his behalf last week, Justice Adolph Lucas today handed down a sentence of fourteen years. Considering the time he has spent behind bars and one year because he pleaded guilty to manslaughter, Davis has another seven years to spend at the Belize Central Prison. The Guatemalan doctor was found dead after being strangled and hit on the head inside his Belama apartment in 2012. The doctor had spent the night with Davis who claimed that he acted on self-defense. Davis testified that he was not gay or bisexual, but the doctor had repeatedly made sexual advances at him which he resisted. Eventually on the night of the killing, Davis said he held him down in a chokehold. The doctor became unconscious but when he woke up, he alleged continued to prey on Davis who resorted to the can of beets. Davis was represented by attorney Bryan Neal.
