Fire Destroys an Abandoned Building in Corozal Town

While residents of Corozal Town were in deep slumber, a fire erupted in the Rainbow Town area. Sometime before three this morning, the fire engulfed an abandoned building located across from the Rainbow Park. Reports are that the building once housed the Kingdom Hall of the Jehova Witnesses, but more recently was occupied by a homeless man. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Just before three o’clock this morning, a fire broke on Seventh Street North Corozal Town and gutted a concrete and wooden structure that was once the Kingdom Hall Church in that northern municipality. The blaze could be seen from a distance as the flames quickly engulfed the building and firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after to extinguish the inferno.

Late this evening, National Fire Service Station Officer Orin Smith told News Five that Corozal Branch firefighters received a call of a structural fire at an abandoned building around two-forty-eight a.m.  The building, which has been abandoned for over a decade, was occupied at the time by a fifty-nine-year-old homeless man. An investigation into the cause of the blaze has since indicated that the building had no utilities and the homeless man has since reported that he was using a candle which burned the bedding on the floor and caused the blaze. The building was completely destroyed. Duane Moody for News Five.
