Triple B’ wins Delhart Courtenay Football Cup

Folks, we’re off to the People’s Stadium O.W. where the Football Federation of Belize presented game two of the Delhart Courtney female championship series yesterday as Suga City Girls hosted Triple B’s who came in with a one game lead. However, it’s the visitors who look to score early when Abbie Halliday finds Rhonda Welcome whose scoring attempt is failed by goalkeeper Carla Alvarez. At the other end Suga City Girls go to the set piece that affords Miriam Villamil this look at goal that she lets slip by. In the meantime, this shot by Welcome forces Carla Alvarez to the air, she lands badly and as a result would eventually be forced to leave the ball game. We must say this ground ball push from Maria Pena provides a problem for Marguerite Hulse who uses her foot skilfully to deny the goal. For Lourdes Torres, who replaces Alvarez in goal for O.W., the going gets rough as two minutes after entering she mishandles Kiana Martinez’s outside shot and Rhonda Welcome picks up rebound and we have a 1-nil lead for Triple B’s. The Suga City Girls try to respond immediately off this corner kick and it pays off when Kara Cattouse takes down Karen Garcia inside wide the eighteen. Referee Jones rules penalty. Patricia Espinoza gets the call O.W. and she beats Maggie Hulse easily to the ball game at 1 a piece. In the final minute of the first half, Abbie Halliday sets up Rhonda Welcome who scores her second goal of the match as we go into intermission with a 2-1 Triple B’s lead.
When actions resumes O.W. works fort he equalizer when Naomi Magana tries the outside shot almost mishandled by goalkeeper Hulse. Downfield, Abbie Halliday launches this left foot that just inches outside the far upright. Folks, the nail in the coffin for Suga City Girls comes off this spot kick triggered by Shirley Codd, Goalkeeper Torres can’t hold on it, Jalna Trapp takes advantage as Triple B’s go on to post the 3–1 big W, sweeping Suga City Girls two straight to claim the Delhart Courtenay Cup and for certain this celebration is in order people. And here is the presentation of the Delhart Courtenay Trophy to coach Kent Gabourel and goalkeeper Marguerite Hulse. In the meantime, Triple B’s Rosebelle Ogaldez emerged with MVP honours while Karen Garcia of Suga City Girls walked away with the most goals scored award.
Now let’s play catch-up on the B.P.F.L. results from over the weekend. San Pedro Bullsharks edged the San Pedro Dolphins 3-2. Nizhee Corozal and F.C. Belize battled to a 1-all draw while the B.D.F. and Suga City Juventus settled for a scoreless stalemate. In the South Zone, Wagiya stung Scorpions 2-1, Tafari shocked Hankook Verdes 1-zip and Georgetown Ibayani hurt Illegulei 3-1. In this week’s schedule for B.D.F. sailed to San Pedro Bullsharks on Wednesday while on Thursday Juventus will host the San Pedro Dolphins and Nizhee Corozal comes to the M.C.C. for a date with F.C. Belize. In the South Ibayani battles Illegulei at Independence on Wednesday and Hankook Verdes plays host to Tafari. On Thursday, Wagiya clashes with Scorpions inside the Carl Ramos Stadium.
We also want to mention that the FFB’s National Inter-District Football Competition kicked off over the weekend featuring 16 teams and we will keep you posted on the same…so stay tuned.
Turning to the Basketball scene, the Interoffice Competition inside the Civic Center is rapidly approaching money time and on Friday night’s schedule undefeated Belize Water Services Ltd, with a 5 and 0 record, hosted Tuff e Nuff who came in will and 2 and 1 showing. And immediately, Densmore “Wabble” Edwards goes to work hitting the first bucket of the outing for Tuff e Nuff. Devon Defour responds with this baby hook that gets the water people going. In heavy traffic, Glen Flowers attacks the rim mine and he gets two for his team. And then Wabble Edwards strikes for three as Tuff e Nuff shows a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Tonight there’s no stopping Densmore Edwards people and this runner is certainly evidence of that. On the other hand, B.W.S. simply can’t get it going tonight so they go down low to their big man Benson Matthews who definitely had to earn these two points. He would finish with nine points, eight rebounds. Still, the question is who is going to contain Densmore Edwards as he goes to the bank for two, gets fouled and would complete the three point play the old fashioned way. And at the half, it is a 31-18 lead for Tuff e Nuff. Things get worse for B.W.S. in the third quarter. Orland Ferguson in traffic gets this bucket to fall. He would finish with eight points. At the other end, Jerome Deny Ellis replies with this jumper. Ellis would lead B.W.S. with sixteen points; most of his points would come in garbage time. When Benson Matthews gets these two points, the deficit is cut to nine. Still at the end of three, the Tuff e Nuff lead is sixteen. However, Densmore Edwards remains unstoppable as he streaks in right side for two points. He would finish with a game high thirty-four, which might just be the high for the season. It’s more Densmore Edwards as he finds the unattended Ferguson who gets the easy deuce. And can you believe this bucket, it’s a three point attempt in heavy traffic and Edwards made it look easy as Tuff E Nuff shuts down B.W.S. Pressure in a 78-55 blow-out.
In other results from the weekend, Alamilla Furniture jerked Atlantic Bank 76-74, the Belize City Council outlasted Cellular Plus/Customs 56-54, S.S.B./B.N.T.U. defaulted to Brodies Milo, Castillo, Sanchez & Burrell beat Central Bank 59-53, the Police clubbed General Post Office 64-54, Belize City Council made it two wins in a row with a 73-52 W over K.H.M.H. and Atlantic Bank rebounded to jolt Belize Telemedia 74-66. On tonight’s ticket at the Civic, Post Office faces Medical & Johnson, S.S.B./B.N.T.U. is scheduled to play B.W.S. and Central Bank goes up against Alamilla’s Furniture/FirstCaribbean.
