Yabra Basketball Court Gets a makeover
Today the renovated Yabra basketball court in Belize City was officially opened. The refurbished facility now features a covered structure and additional upgrades. The project is a part of the downtown rejuvenation project that was launched back in 2015. That project includes physical work on a number of historical buildings, as well as the development of public spaces. The Yabra basketball court is one of the areas rejuvenated to a tune of two-hundred thousand dollars under the project. Here’s more from today’s opening.
H.E Timothy T.Y. Hsiang, Secretary General, TaiwanICDF
“It is the symbol of the improvement or urban public spaces which is the first hardware item completed in the Belize City House of Culture and Downtown Project. This project aims to promote awareness and appreciation of colonial heritage and cultural identities through the rejuvenation of a pilot selection of historical buildings as well as to encourage inclusive community development through participatory activities and improvement of public spaces such as the Yarborough Green. I am more than happy to tell you that Taiwan ICDF shared this project’s information at the ward urban forum which is a UN event held in February this year. The main participatory things that we want to share with the world are our focus on culture, understanding of the community and presenting the power of community stories. With which that is based on the project, people’s knowledge and appreciation of their colonial heritage may increase and consequently their awareness of themselves and identity may increase.”
Tracy Panton, Area Rep, Albert Division
“The installation of the roof here on the Yabra basketball court, along with proper lighting, landscaping and other amenities at a total investment sum of two hundred thousand Belize dollars is only phase one. These facilities, I have no doubt, will continue to serve as a catalyst for more community outreach, more community interaction, more community participation.”
