Opposition Leader receives Law Books from Attorney General

The Attorney General’s Ministry donated five thousand dollars worth of law books to the Opposition today. Michael Peyrefitte dropped off the law books at the Leader of the Opposition’s Office, John Briceño. Peyrefitte says that Briceño reached out to him requesting hardbound copies of the laws of Belize. Today he presented the latest version of the law books.  Here’s how that handing over went.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“This is the latest version that we have, it is up to 2011, unfortunately, because currently we are working, Party Leader, on the online version of the laws. We want to, in a couple months to a year the most, to have Belizeans or anybody in any part of the world, you go online and you can get the up to date laws as they pass – that is the goal. But many people, like myself, we prefer the paper. You can feel it, you can touch it, you can scratch on it. This is up to 2011 but we are also currently working on some hard versions that you can add to these as they – as these have been amended. Also, you can go to Print Belize and they can give you a nice bounded version of 2012, 20143, 2014, 2015 and it is about a hundred or one hundred and fifty dollars for a bound copy of all the laws. And so we are meeting you partway, for an additional investment of fifteen hundred dollars, you could have these bounded copies and then you will have all the laws of Belize right in front of you on paper. I know people always say that the Government will never give anything to the Opposition, but this belongs to everybody.”

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“We really appreciate the gift to our offices, the office of the Leader of the Opposition. This is where we do most of the legislative work, where the representatives of the party who are in Belmopan – we work from this office. Of course we also do some of the party work. We have some big shelves, so we are going to put it there and so it is going to be prominently displayed. We are going to say it was from my friend the Attorney General and we will put it to good use.”
