Free zone company accused of smuggling

A company in the Corozal Free Zone is in big trouble tonight, accused of trying to smuggle a container of duty free goods out of the zone and into the rest of Belize where customs duties are a fact of life. According to a release from the Customs Department, Ejosmirga Limited, and a company truck driver, Francisco Tun, tried to drive a container load of goods through the Santa Elena customs station without declaring the container’s contents. The goods are valued at over a hundred and nine thousand dollars, plus duty of over thirty-three thousand. The law calls for a penalty of triple the amount of duty, which would mean a potential liability of over a hundred grand. The accused are slated to appear in Corozal Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
