Veteran dive entrepreneur dies in Mexico
He was a fixture of Belize’s tourism and maritime community for the better part of two decades. Tonight it is with regret that we report the death of Hugh Parkey. Parkey, proprietor of Hugh Parkey’s Dive Connection, died on Sunday in Cancun where he was vacationing with his wife Theresa and a number of friends. The veteran diver, who came to Belize as captain of the boat La Strega and later managed Turneffe Island Lodge and Fort Street Guest House, had been SCUBA diving off the Mexican coast. He is said to have suffered chest and shoulder pains shortly after he got back in the dive boat and despite CPR, succumbed to what appears to be a heart attack. Arrangements are being made for the return of Parkey’s body to Belize. Hugh Parkey; dead at fifty-six.
