Opposition Leader: “It’s in the D.N.A. of the U.D.P. That They Fight over Everything”
The People’s United Party is joining the Belize Territorial Volunteers in condemning the comments made by Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington. Elrington recently told the press that people have to be crazy if they do not support taking the Belize/Guatemala dispute to the I.C.J. for resolution. BTV categorizes Elrington’s comments as insulting and degrading. Leader of the Opposition John Briceño agrees, saying it’s in the D.N.A. of the U.D.P. to make such controversial remarks.
John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition
“I would never say something like that. I believe we need to respect the collective wisdom of the Belize people. Despite the fact of how I feel whether we should go or not go to the I.C.J., I believe that collectively as a people we are going to make the right decision. I believe strongly that we need to give the fats to our citizens. At the end of the day I really believe that our citizens will make the right decision. And if that decision is yes or no, I will respect the decision they make. But I will never, in my mind think about telling anyone that they are crazy because they do not accept the position that I have. I need to respect your decision. Probably it is in the D.N.A. of the U.D.P. that they fight over everything. Even today after being ten years in Government they still behave like they are in opposition. So it is probably in their D.N.A. that they work that day.”
