Airport, prison will go to private management

In other Cabinet news, that executive body has agreed to introduce legislation to strengthen the operations of the Protected Areas Conservation Trust, as well as pave the way for the transfer of management of the Philip Goldson International Airport. The P.G.I.A. will be run by a group associated with Germany’s Lufthansa Airlines. The new operators will assume the Airport Authority’s existing debt as well as invest heavily in a longer runway, enlarged terminal and new cargo facilities. The company’s revenues will come from airline landing fees, rental of commercial space and passenger departure taxes. News 5 understands that all existing contracts will be honoured and present staff will retain their job security.

A similar management change has also been approved for Hattieville Prison. A non-profit group led by Cisco Construction’s John Woods and composed largely of local Rotarians, is slated to assume management of the notoriously ill run facility. The new administrators hope to employ a combination of private sector management techniques and help from generous donors to run the prison more humanely for less money than is currently being spent by government.
