Escaped prisoner caught in P.G.
With the news of the big bust in Mexico, another capture–this time by local cops–has been pushed to page two. But it’s still a big story. On Tuesday night, Punta Gorda police with the support of the Belize Defence Force captured escaped prisoner, Mervin Reyes. Around midnight, one of the soldiers sighted Reyes walking on a feeder road about three miles outside of town. Reyes, who was armed with a machete, was quickly ambushed and taken to the P.G. police station. According to police, Reyes confessed to them that when he arrived in Punta Gorda, he tried to make it across the Guatemalan border, but was short of money. That’s when he decided to get a job on a nearby farm. At the time of his escape from Hattieville Prison, Reyes was on remand for a robbery at a Corozal bank. It is also suspected that while on the run, he held up El Cas Supermarket on the Northern Highway. Tonight, Reyes is back behind bars, but according to sources at Hattieville, he is already boasting that he won’t stay incarcerated for long.
