…But Belizeans driving from States face trouble

While Belizeans may now find it easier to enjoy the pleasures of Quintana Roo, the same cannot be said for those driving from the United States through Mexico. Today News 5 received a desperate phone call from a Belizean in Texas, Oscar Perez, who claims that he along with as many as sixty Belizeans have been held up at the border by Mexican authorities. The apparent problem is that Mexico has cracked down on the amount of electronic appliances that can be brought into the country and the Belizeans as usual are travelling with TV’s, VCR’s and other goods intended for use in Belize. The situation is not a new one and has been the subject of lengthy negotiations between Mexico and Belize, as well as the other Central American countries. Meanwhile, the convoy continues to cool its heels at a border crossing near Matamoros. They have been advised to seek help from the Belizean embassy in Mexico City.
