Suspect killed by cops; Dept. will investigate
A suspect shot by police in Corozal has died of his wounds and the man’s family is contradicting the official story of his death. According to police reports, around noon on Tuesday officers in Corozal visited the home of Francis Diego in order to affect his arrest. They say that when Diego was being apprehended, he and his wife put up violent resistance. They say Diego attacked them with a knife and then fled. Police gave chase and when they recaptured Diego he allegedly injured an officer with the knife and had to be subdued by being shot in both legs. Initially taken to Corozal Hospital for treatment, Diego was transferred to the K.H.M.H., but was dead on arrival. According to accounts by Diego’s family, however, Diego did not resist arrest, but did flee the scene. They claim that he was shot in the back, not the legs, while running away. The discrepancy should hopefully be cleared up by a post-mortem scheduled to be conducted and an internal investigation already initiated by the Police Department.
