Caye man missing at sea after boat capsizes
Meanwhile, the search for a man missing since last week Friday in the waters off the Glover’s Reef Atoll continued today, but without success. According to police, around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June twenty-eight, Rene Barahona and Hakeem Flores, both caretakers working on the southwest Caye of the atoll, went fishing in a canoe. When the men were some distance from the island, Flores says a big wave caused the vessel to overturn and both men were forced to hang on to the capsized canoe. Details are still sketchy as to what happened next, but reports are that Barahona tried to swim away from the boat, but disappeared beneath the waves and wasn’t seen again. Fishermen passing through the area spotted the stranded Flores and rescued him. News 5 understands that last week the waters off Glover’s Reef were rough, and it is believed the situation played a significant factor in accident. Despite the attempts of several search parties, Barahona’s body has yet to be recovered.
