Corozal Resident Died in Fatal RTA in Quintana Roo

Today, there is confirmation from relatives and friends that the man who perished in a fatal traffic accident in Quintana Roo, Mexico was a resident of Paraiso Village in Corozal. The Belmopan Trojan Basketball team was also traveling on an ADO bus from Cancun en route to Veracruz when the accident occurred; several of the athletes sustained varying injuries to the body. But seated near the front of the bus, were Alvaro Ascensio, his wife Angelita Ascencio, their granddaughter Mia Ascencio and her daughter, a female toddler. The family was returning to Belize when the passenger bus, carrying about forty persons, collided into the rear of a Ford flatbed truck. The truck was loaded with lumber, but because it had experienced mechanical problems, it was parked on the side of the highway. According to details released, the accident happened about forty-five minutes away from Chetumal, near Bacalar. The elderly man died on the scene and his wife was trapped inside the bus. Mexican firefighters had to use the jaws-of-life to rescue her from the bus. In a post today, Mia wrote that Angelita suffered a fractured ankle and received stitches on her head. She also received injuries to the head, neck and knee and has a swollen leg. Luckily, her daughter escaped with minor injuries and was discharged from Clinica Campestre in Chetumal today. Mia and Angelita will remain hospitalized for two days as they recover.
