YWCA launches summer programmes

Story Picture
With the Ministry of Education estimating that more than forty thousand primary school students will be out on the loose for two months of summer holidays, there are no shortage of activities designed to help keep them entertained. One such programme is being launched by the Young Women’s Christian Association with a series of activities planned to kick off in two weeks. Classes range from the educational, with remedial tutoring in math and English, to a skills development programme, with cooking and sewing classes for interested adults. Principal of the Y’s Helping Early Leavers Programme, Norma Sutherland, says if you like being outdoors, you can also sign up for the “getting to know your country tour.”

“What we will have again this year is the usually, know your country, where children and adults go to different parts… It’ a educational tour, they go for a week everyday…we can’t go everyday this year, but I think it’s three or four places they are going for the week and really learn about the flora, fauna, the environment and so on.”

“How important do you find this know you country camp for students and adults?”

Norma Sutherland

“Very important. Even the adults who go look forward to it because they learn a lot too. Things that they took for granted is pointed out to them and it helps the children to become more aware of the environment and to take care of the environment, to take care of all the animals and birds and so on. Children used to love to kill birds and animals, but when they go and learn more about them and learn that it’s not right to do this, it really helps.”

A small registration fee will be charged to participants. For more information on the programmes, please visit the headquarters of the YWCA on St. Thomas Street.
