No More Rainbow Flag at the U.S. Embassy in Belize? UNIBAM Weighs In
Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are aiming to forbid U.S. embassies from raising “gay pride” flags, or any banner other than the Stars and Stripes. A Republican Rep is spearheading the effort in response to a handful of instances in which American embassies around the world fly rainbow flags to promote homosexual “pride” or “rights.” Belize is one of the countries where the U.S. Embassy raises the rainbow flag. Today, the President of UNIBAM was asked to comment on the seemingly anti-LGBT proposal.
Caleb Orosco, President, UNIBAM
“As the oldest and only policy and advocacy LGBT organization in this country, we have a strong transnational framework that we work with. The US is not the only government we engage regarding LGBT issues. I could add Canada, E.U., the U.K. Government. A part of that process really is to leverage those political engagements behind the scenes for actual interventions or commitment of resources and so on. With regards to the Trump Administration, I have come to accept that Trump will be Trump. And his position will consistently reflect his base of republican voters who believe in what his position is. But I am reminded over and over again that there is a difference between the public persona of the Head of State and the internal practices of the foreign affairs mechanism of a state. And the internal practices of a particular state reinforce one basic principle – the respect for rule of law doesn’t change. And who whole the visible support or substantial support or the concrete support may be minimal or absent, the respect for rule of law will not change.”
