B.T.B. Issues 3 Scholarships to Deserving Students

The event was a joint-award ceremony as this year’s B.T.B. scholarship recipients were also presented with certificates of acceptance into the programme. Leanna Duncan will pursue an Associate’s Degree at Saint John’s College Junior College, while Jinelle Novelo will pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Belize. The third and this year’s Jean Shaw Scholarship awardee is Alma Urbina, who will also pursue a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Belize. Over thirty persons have benefitted from the scholarships with seven still in the programme. “We awarded three students this year, recipients of an associate’s scholarship award, a bachelor’s scholarship award and Jean Shaw Scholarship award. The first two provide for tuition coverage and the Jean Shaw Scholarship is a little wider in terms of its scope. It is aptly designated after Miss Jean Shaw who was a pioneer in the industry in the past and is awarded to a female recipient as well.”

“How many persons have benefited over the years?”

Herbert Haylock

“Over the years since we started the programme, in excess of thirty persons have benefited from this scholarship programme. We currently have approximately seven students in the program still that are finishing up within the last two years in terms of their cycle. The scholarships are also issued over a two-year period and covers two years in terms of the programmes.”

“Was there any criteria for these persons; that they had to satisfy?”

Herbert Haylock

“Yes in terms of looking at educational criteria from the scholastic portion and grades, looking at their GPAs and again based on financial need as well. So those are some of the factors considered in the final determinations for the awards that are given.”

The Jean Shaw Tourism Scholarship was established in memory of the late Jean Ursilla Shaw, a renowned female tourism pioneer who played an integral part in the development of Belize’s tourism industry in her lifetime. The Scholarship was established by the B.T.B. to support the development of qualified Belizean females pursuing a career in tourism. The scholarship covers tuition, books, and fees.
