Vital Statistics Unit in Belize City Abruptly Closed; Several Persons Terminated
The offices of the Vital Statistics Unit in the city abruptly closed on Wednesday, interrupting the flow of services to persons applying for birth certificates and the registering of other important documents. It is reported that the closure was due to serious internal conflicted within the unit. Today, the People’s United Party commented on the firing of several key personnel within the unit, including Patricia Hinkson, who was considered politically connected but let go earlier this week. The unit has been plagued with complaints of irregularities and deep-rooted corruption which severely hindered the timely delivery of services. The P.U.P. makes the point that the closure during the current re-registration exercise undermines the democratic process. P.U.P. Leader John Briceño says, (Quote) “Several issues and inconsistencies brought to the forefront by persons on the ground, including the underperformance of the Vital Statistics office, greatly undermine the overarching objective of achieving a clean and new voters list that should enhance the democratic process.” (Unquote) Of note, is that the offices reopened today with a new director. Hinkson offered no comment when contacted on Wednesday.
