O.W. cane farmer killed by bees
Cane farmers will tell you that the most dangerous aspect of working in a Belizean cane field is the possibility of running into a poisonous snake. On Saturday, however, it was not a Tommy Goff that attacked a canero; it was a swarm of killer bees. According to police reports, fifty-four year old Eluterio Cal, along with another man, was working in a cane field near his home village of San Lazaro in the Orange Walk District when he encountered a swarm of Africanised Bees. Cal collapsed under the onslaught and was taken to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A post-mortem certified the cause of death as anaphylactic shock caused by the bee stings.
