Oscar Mira elected as PUP’s Belmopan Standard Bearer
After being postponed twice, the P.U.P.’s Belmopan convention proceeded as schedule on Sunday at the Belmopan Comprehensive High School. Three candidates put their names on the ballot: Michelle Rodriguez, Wiezsman Pat, and Oscar Mira. Arthur Saldivar who fought tooth and nail to be part of the convention failed to convince the courts last Friday that he was a victim of an unfair vetting process and as such his legal battle with the P.U.P. to allow him to participate ended. After the votes were tabulated, Mira was announced as the new standard bearer for the P.U.P. in the Belmopan constituency. He bested Rodriguez’s one hundred and seventy-one votes and Wiezsman Pat’s ninety votes. Mira won overwhelmingly receiving six hundred and fifty-three votes.

“This journey started many months ago. It didn’t start today. I didn’t start last week. I would like to thank all the supporters, the team. Those that were walking with me during sunlight, rain, those that encouraged me to continue the journey, I want to say congratulations to you. Congratulations to the party. We are strong in Belmopan. This is the beginning. I want to say congratulations to Mr. Wiezsman Pat. Congratulations to Michelle Rodriguez. A woman is not easy so put yourself in this position. She has done well. This is one party. We are not the enemy. The enemy is the U.D.P. We invited everyone to come together. We will win the next general elections being united.”
A total of nine hundred and forty voters participated. Twenty two ballots were rejected.
