Parents Strike Against Incompetent Teacher in Mabilha
In the remote village of Mabilha in the Toledo District, parents decided to keep their children at home for a second day in protest. They were up in arms that a request to have a teacher transferred from the school had gone unanswered for over a year. The allegations made against the teacher is that he is habitually absent from school, teaches when he wants to and consumes alcohol heavily. These concerns were reflected in a letter written to the school’s management in September 2017, however, that school year came and went and nothing was done to address any of those issues. With him returning to Mabilha Government School on Monday morning, parents decided that they would withhold attendance until the matter is resolved. This morning, Chairman Mateo Salam contacted News Five to explain the situation in Mabilha.
On the Phone: Mateo Salam, Chairman, Mabilha Village
“I am calling on behalf of the parents of my community concerning one of the teachers, Mr. Angel Cal, today. The school in Mabilha is closed because the parents’ concern has not been heard by the relevant authority. Because of this the parents are standing up for what is right because their children have been neglected by Mr. Angel Cal, Mr. Cal always being absent, late, consumes alcohol and you name it. The parents will continue to keep their children at home until this issue is resolved, otherwise there will be no classes. This is the problem that we are facing in my community of Mabilha.”
