Nets top raiders in B.B.A. action

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and you’re camped around another issue of Sports Monday. We’ll take you immediately into Friday night’s B.B.A. clash of undefeated ballclubs at the City Centre, where B.T.L. Nets played host to five-time champ, the Raiders.

Meet the phone company’s big gun Keith Acosta, and he gets the contest started with this triple. On the very next play, Frank Lord picks Roger Favela’s pocket and rewards Acosta who helped on the play; of course it is show time.

The Raiders response comes from team captain Bart Sanchez and his three gets them on the scoreboard. But it’s B.T.L. with the early momentum, and when Keith Acosta misses, Claude “Too Tall” Jones, a former Raider, one hands it down with authority.

But wait a minute, Darwin Carter no longer at U.B., passes to Claude Jones, who is no longer a Raider–could be some confusion with the uniforms.

Really Bart, this pass is just perfect, so Damon Ollie delivers and makes it look real good. However, the Nets go on a 15-0 run. David Laqua by the way of Hawaii, starts it off with this three-pointer. He would finish with four three-point shots and seventeen points.

Acosta to Rupert Brown and he hits over six foot eight Eric Maye. It’s AC Augustine now off the Ernest Broaster miss and the putback looks impressive. And when A.C. finds Broaster off the penetration, the Nets rally to a 29-9 lead.

Dave Laqua asks Eric, may I and Eric says you may not. Here comes the Raiders. Lloyd Leslie wants three. Lloyd Leslie gets three.

Darwin Carter, with the long pass to Leslie who delivers the easy two this time at the half the Raider deficit is 15.

If you’re awake, you’ll have noticed that the Raiders have switched tops to avoid further confusion with the uniforms. But only two of these uniforms show up defensively on this play, so “Too Tall” exhales.

Down by fourteen in late second half, the Raiders mount another comeback. Darwin Carter penetrates and converts.

Down by eight, the Raiders blow two easy opportunities to score, and it’s the closest they would get in this half of basketball play. Laqua beat the Raiders down court and finishes the lay up for two.

Acosta, who led the Nets with thirty points, gives it up to Claude “Too tall” Jones and yes, “Too Tall” this must feel good. B.T.L. Nets go on to post the 83-62 big W.

Keith Acosta, B.T.L. Nets

“I think we caught the Raiders off-guard tonight and we definitely know the next time around they’ll be much prepared. But we’re just trying to go out there and play the best that we can.”

James Adderley

“We free throw shooting was not on its best tonight.”

Keith Acosta

“Well you know, it’s definitely room for improvement and as the season progress I hope to better myself and you know hey, it’s just the start so I think I should…”

James Adderley

“What’s the difference for the winner in this ballgame, what did B.T.L. Nets do that made a difference?”

Keith Acosta

“I think each and everyone of the players came out to play. They took the initiative on their backs to decide that hey, I’m gonna help my teammates and I’m gonna carry the load and I can just go out there and play the best that I can play.”

In other B.B.A. matches over the weekend, San Cas U.B., the defending champion, stopped Orange Walk 83-71, and Corozal Kaus needed overtime last night to rally past Dangriga’s Aba Iseni 71-60.

Now lets head out to Rogers Stadium for the Central American Softball Championship Tournament.

And here we find the emcee introducing Linda Reyes, former pitcher and Hall of Famer for Belizean softball. And Linda throws the ceremonial first pitch and the international triangular is officially opened. And it’s Belize facing El Salvador in the nightcap.

It’s Mary Flowers on the mound for the National champ B.T.L., who after walking one batter and hitting another serves up this hit to Ana Celia Vasquez, who brings home the first run of the ballgame.

The next batter, Cindy Laura, should here have been out, but the throw from the short stop is an error and another run scores. That forces a powwow with head coach Raymond Lashley, it this hit from El Salvador makes it a 4-nil ball in the first inning.

With runners at the corner in the bottom of the third, Lydia Cacho forces the runner at first base, but the run scores to get belie going.

In the fourth Lydia Cacho should have come up with this catch, she does not and the visitors tack on another run. They would add a totally of three more before the conclusion of seven innings and would go on to win over Belize 8-3.

This tournament concludes on Saturday. It extends from the nineteenth to the twenty-fifth. And incidentally at 2:00 p.m. yesterday, Guatemala fell to El Salvador in an 11-2 score. So obviously Belize does have it’s work cut out if it’s gonna win this regional softball champions tournament in the role of host. Hopefully, they will be able to pull it off, right the ship, get it on, right Raymond Lashley?

That’s it for now, we certainly invited you back same time, same place next week. I’m James Adderley, Jah over all.
