Business community a no show at CET open day

Story Picture
Every year, students at the Centre for Employment Training eagerly welcome their peers onto the campus to show off the fruits of their labour. But according to the faculty, the one sector of society they really wanted to impress didn’t show up. Sheldon Samuels explains.

Sheldon Samuels, English/Communications Teacher

“Right after open day the students go on what is called on the job training or O.J.T. now what we have especially to highlight this is what you see behind me, a fountain that is done by three different trades, plumbing, masonry and electrical. They came together and they put their minds together and created this fountain that is right behind me. when we go into the hospitality and catering programme, there’s a to be displayed there, as well as the many other programmes; they’re displaying their very best.”

“Today we had expected the business community to come in and to see our students at work. We want them to see the students actually working instead of projects that are finished. And seeing them do that will be a better highlight for them in that they would actually see what we have to offer. It’s a day that we are proud of, it’s a day we get our trainees to actually put into practice what they have learnt. As our theme says, we’re actually trying to develop technical minds, using practical experiences; and we believe that this day is just that.”

The Centre for Employment Training, located in Belize City on St. Thomas Street, offers courses in a wide range of subjects including electrical studies, woodwork, mechanical engineering, food and hospitality and plumbing.
