San Pedro hotelier killed in boating accident

Another early morning collision, this time between a parked dredge and a speeding skiff has left a San Pedro resort manager dead. According to police, thirty-two year old Logan Gentry, manager of El Pescador fishing resort, located three miles north of town, had been socialising at a local night spot with friends. Reports are that at approximately 3:00 this morning, Gentry got into his fifteen-foot fibreglass Boston Whaler, with eighty-five horsepower engine, and headed home. But he never made it. At about 6:45 that same morning, a passing boat captain spotted the skiff near a dredge in the Boca del Rio area and reported the sighting to employees at El Pescador. Relatives responded immediately and found the boat with damage to the left side of the bow and Gentry with a large cut wound to his head. He was rushed to the Lion’s Clinic in San Pedro, but was dead on arrival. A post-mortem was conducted on the body this afternoon but these findings have yet to be released to the media. As police continue their investigations into the accident, it has not been clearly established whether the dredge, owned by Jerry McDermott, carried any lights or reflectors. Police sources tell News 5 the dredge had been parked offshore for at least three months and was well clear of the channel normally used by boats. As a frequent traveller of the area, by all accounts, Gentry would have been familiar with the dredge’s location. El Pescador is one of the island’s oldest resorts to specialise in sport fishing. Until his death, Gentry had been active in opening a new fishing facility on the Rio Grande in Toledo called El Pescador South.
