Haulover Bridge to close on Sunday
People travelling this weekend to Belize City from the north or those going in the opposite direction should listen up, because your plans may need some adjustment. On Sunday morning at five a.m. the Haulover Bridge at mile five on the Northern Highway will be closed for vital maintenance. Traffic, except for heavy vehicles, will be allowed to pass only at half-hour intervals up until 6:00 that evening. At that time, the bridge will be closed to all traffic until 5:00 on Monday morning. Motorists are urged to allow themselves extra time, particularly if they are travelling to the airport, or if they are driving after 6:00 on Sunday, to use the Western Highway and Burrell Boom road. Buses will be among those allowed to cross the bridge during Sunday’s half-hour intervals, but as safety precaution passengers will have to disembark and walk while the bus drives over the span empty. According to Chief Engineer in the Ministry of Works, Cadet Henderson, the reinforced concrete decking of the bridge will be replaced and new safety guardrails will also be installed. The work will be carried out on the Belize City approach this Sunday and the process will be repeated a week later on the Ladyville side of the bridge. Contractor for the project is the Bella Vista Group.
