Bz. City fire leaves 11 homeless

Story Picture
A weekend blaze has left three Belize City families homeless and the Fire Department still searching for answers. Tonight, eight children and three mothers are staying with family and friends after their homes and personal belongings were destroyed. Jacqueline Woods reports on the tragedy.

Around midnight on Sunday, residents of Pelican Street extension watched helplessly as a fire quickly engulfed their neighbour’s homes. There was very little the Nunez family could have done to save any of their household possessions as the blaze that began in one of the houses situated in the back of the yard quickly spread to two nearby buildings.

Norris Fisher, Assistant Fire Chief

“On arrival at the fire, we found two small houses engulfed in flames and a third was beginning to burn. The firefighters got into action and the fire was brought under control in a short space of time.”

This morning, the three Nunez sisters and their eight children who lived in these buildings woke up to the reality that they are now homeless. When News 5 visited the scene, friends and relatives were busy helping to clean up the mess. According to them, the fire victims are receiving help from family, concerned neighbours and the Department of Social Services.

Fire officials say they have yet to determine what started the fire.
