Belize without a Solicitor General for almost a year

It is almost a year and the Barrow administration has been unable to fill the post of Solicitor General. News Five confirmed today that no one has yet been appointed to the top job since the June 2008 departure of the then Solicitor General Tanya Herwanger who precipitously left that office, and the country for that matter. Herwanger was publicly rebuked by the Prime Minister Barrow due to her legal advice on the transfer of Senior Superintendent of Police, Chester Williams. In the past eleven months the Government has been outsourcing cases to private attorneys. The Attorney General Wilfred Elrington was unavailable for comment today but it its known that a number of prospective candidates have turned down offers to the post. And in respect of the AG, our attention was drawn to the April 18 issue of the Government Gazette in which the legal adviser, Gian Gandhi, was appointed Attorney General in one instance when Elrington was away from the country. In another instance senior counsel Lois Young was also appointed to act. The only other attorney in the Barrow administration is Marcel Cardona and we all know he ended on the back bench after he fell out of grace with the PM.
