B.P.F.L. gears up for game one of football finals

Story Picture
This weekend Belize City is going to be inundated with football fans from all over the country. They will pack into the M.C.C. Grounds to witness the season’s peak: Game one of the championship finals in the Regent Challenge Cup. The showdown between Orange Walk’s Fabro’s Juventus Stars and Kulture Yabra is to produce more than a few legends. The Belize Premier Football League, aware of the intensity of the match-up, says it’s making sure everyone will be able to enjoy the game safely.

Reynaldo Malik, Deputy Commissioner, B.P.F.L.

“Well we had mandated from the home team, in this case Kulture Yabra, and they’re raised the level of police officers that will be there, and we’ve done this after we consulted with the Police Department. I had a meeting with Mr. Henderson on Tuesday afternoon and we did some consulting and talked about what the Police Department thought was the best way to go about securing the venue, as well as making sure that the referees and other officials were safe. We reached an agreeable situation and we conveyed this to the home-team and they agreed that this would be the best way to go about it.”

“Any advice to those people who will be going out to the game?”

“A couple things, the league has a not bottle policy, whether it’s alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. Everyone will be searched at the gate, the street will closed off from Calle al Mar to the small street right besides Belize Ex-Servicemen League. So if you’re thinking about parking, you might want to go a little bit earlier on so you can secure yourself a nice parking and don’t have to walk about half a mile to get to the game.”

“The league itself, we’re very happy with the way this particular season has turned out for us. as I’m sure you’re aware, the last season had a lot of turmoil with hurricanes and fights between the league and the parent organisation. This season has gone rather smoothly I must say. We’ve had a few disciplinary problems here and there, but we’ve managed to overcome those small obstacles and we’re pretty happy with the way it’s turned out so far. Unfortunately, not every team can win. At the end of the season, there’s only going to be one team standing, but at least the team that finishes second is also sure of a CONCACAF berth. Which is a chance to appear internationally and represent Belize as a country on a world stage, so we’re pretty happy right now.”

Kickoff for the game is 4:00 p.m. Tickets will go on sale starting at 10:00 Sunday morning.
