Hackers access B.T.L.’s voicemail system

Story Picture
If you’re one of B.T.L.’s thousands of voice mail users, chances are when you tried to check your messages on Thursday, you heard a strange, if not disturbing message. While some of the recordings simply said “You’ve been hacked”, others were obscene. Today News 5 spoke to people who were affected by the new announcements and the people who are still trying to find out what went wrong.

Candy Shaw, Student

“A male voice saying some rude stuff. I don’t now…it was incredible. I was wondering what it was, but I don’t know. It lasted until the evening.”

Karen Bevans, G.M., Marketing and Sales

“Access was gained and the greeting saying, “you’ve been hacked” had been left on the mailboxes. Specifically, I could say that it’s not a message, meaning that access to the individual mailboxes was not gained. It is access to the attendant mailbox, which is just able to leave greetings and not individual messages…”

Ann-Marie Williams

“So it’s the umbrella mailbox, like B.T.L.’s?”

Karen Bevans

“Yes. So the privacy or access to your mailbox is still intact. So I would like to advise customers that no access to their mailbox was there.”

Bevans says their engineers are working to ascertain how the integrity of their voice mail system was breached.
